MORGAN HILL – A man died when he jumped from the East Dunne Avenue overpass in Morgan Hill onto southbound U.S. 101 and was hit by a motorist just after 10 p.m Thursday.

The motorist left the scene without stopping, police said.

Sgt. Dave Leonard of the Morgan Hill Police Department said the motorist, if found, would not be charged because the incident was deemed to be an intentional act by the victim.

The jump was an apparent suicide attempt, Leonard said. The victim, who appeared to be in his late teens or early 20s, was carrying a wallet, but when police traced the identification the owner of the wallet turned out to be alive and well.

The owner had been drinking in a bar two weeks ago when the wallet was stolen, Leonard said.

Two witnesses, from Soledad and Salinas, were traveling southbound on U.S. 101 and provided police with some information.

“Unfortunately, there is always an increase in this kind of activity at this time of year,” Leonard said.

The coroner’s office said Friday that they had located no next of kin and could not yet identify the man.
