The Hollister High JVs bolted into the final four of the 16-team Oak Grove Invitational Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday with a 28-21 slugfest over Sacred Heart Prep of Atherton.
The Balers (5-0) face Menlo School at 8 p.m. in one semifinal. Valley Christian and Presentation meet in the other semi, making the Balers the only public school left.
“We struggled a bit with their man defense,” said Baler head coach Tom Dean.
The Balers also struggled at the line, going 8-for-23.
“Our bench strength was the difference,” said Dean. “And our defense was super.”
Courtney Almaguer led the Balers with nine points.
Baler bit: Oakland Raiders wideout Jerry Rice, who made a Hall of Fame career with the San Francisco 49ers, is a strong bet to be in attendance at the Baler game. His daughter plays for the Knights of Menlo School. He has made it the past two games the Knights have played.
