Kathryn Nelson passed away Dec. 2 at the age of 99 at William
and Inzez Mabie Southside Skilled Nursing Facility. A lady who was
gracious to a fault, dignified and strong to the end. Kathryn
epitomized the definition of wife and mother
– a sense of responsibility for her family and most of all her
God. Her unfailing belief in God was an inspiration to all who knew
her. Loyal to the Blessed Mother, her recitation of the Rosary held
true meaning for her daily, and throughout her life.
Kathryn Nelson passed away Dec. 2 at the age of 99 at William and Inzez Mabie Southside Skilled Nursing Facility. A lady who was gracious to a fault, dignified and strong to the end. Kathryn epitomized the definition of wife and mother – a sense of responsibility for her family and most of all her God. Her unfailing belief in God was an inspiration to all who knew her. Loyal to the Blessed Mother, her recitation of the Rosary held true meaning for her daily, and throughout her life.

As a native of Braidwood, Ill., Kathryn was the eldest daughter of Vittorio Delmastro and Angeline Berta, who had 10 children. Her marriage to Marchel Ingram Nelson brought her to Rock Springs, Wyo., and ultimately San Francisco, where she lived for 27 years with her husband. In 1975 she and her husband settled in Hollister to be near their son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She was a simplistic woman, devoted to home, family and church. Her concern for others was very important to her, and was evident in her volunteerism as a pink lady at Hazel Hawkins Hospital. She cared for her husband until his death in 1988 from Alzheimer’s Disease.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Marchel V. and Madeline Nelson of Hollister; granddaughter Deborah Anne George and husband Christopher of Cottage Grove, Ore.; granddaughter Kathleen Marie Rianda and husband John of Hollister; grandchildren Travis, Spencer and Connor George, and Adam and Sara Rianda; sister Mildred Usler of Wauwatosa, Wis.; sisters-in-law Kay Delmastro and Ellen Delmastro; many nieces and nephews; and caregiver Betty Ford, who, through her care and devotion, was an integral part of Kathryn’s life for the last nine years. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John, Sebastian, Fred, Philip, Victor, Dominic, Thomas and Joseph Delmastro.

Friends are invited to join the family on Monday, Dec. 6 at Sacred Heart Church on Fifth and College streets for a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11am. Entombment will follow at Calvary Mausoleum.

Memorials are preferred to the William and Inez Mabie Southside Skilled Nursing Facility, c/o Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home, 870 San Benito St., CA 95023.
