Kathy Jo Shafer, residing in Los Banos, California and formerly of Terre Haute, Indiana and Hollister, California, passed away on August 20, 2007.
Her husband of 30 years, Bradley R. Shafer, her parents, Robert A. Hoopengarner and Patricia L. Hoopengarner of Terre Haute, Indiana; her mother-in-law Helen S. Shafer of Richmond, Indiana; a sister, Cheryl Singer and her husband Roger Singer, a brother Robert C. Hoopengarner and his wife Barbara Hoopengarner, a brother-in –law Gene Shafer, a sister-in-law, Karen Shafer, a sister-in-law Cynthia Shields and her husband, Dan Shields, a brother-in-law James Cashman and his wife Karen Cashman and a brother-in-law Mark Uhl, survive Kathy.
Kathy is also survived by 7 nephews and 4 nieces, Nicholas Uhl, Dane Uhl, Brandon Hoopengarner, Shane Weber, Jeffery Shields, Jason Shafer, James Cashman, Megan Shafer, Emily Shafer, Elizabeth Shafer and Victoria Cashman and World Full of Kids that she provided child care for over the years, but especially one that was very near and dear to her heart, Nikolas Thomas.
Kathy graduated from Honey Creek High School in 1971 and graduated from Indiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work in 1975.
Kathy was always very active in the communities that she lived in. She was a member of Newcomers Club in Evansville, IN. Kathy was a member and past president of the Hollister Lioness Club, working on many service projects, including the Holly Tree Boutique that raised funds for the community. Kathy was a member and past president of the San Benito Child Care Association, earning a Child Care Award of Excellence from San Benito County Local Child Care Planning Council and a Certificate of Recognition from the California Legislative Assembly for excellence in Child Care, while operating Kathy’s Family Child Care for 20 years.
Kathy was an organ and tissue donor and the information from those organizations is that she has saved many lives with her donations.
Kathy’s final resting place will be Terre Haute, Indiana.
A celebration of Kathy’s Life and potluck will be held at Grace Bible Church, 634 Monterey Street, Hollister, CA 95023, on September 8, 2007, from 1 –3 P.M. In lieu of flowers, Kathy’s wish was that donations be made to United Way of San Benito County specifying children’s services.
