Kermit Daniel DeLaurant, 68, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 in Gilroy, CA. He will be dearly missed.
He was born in Chicago to Laurice and Agnes DeLaurant, but lived his first four years with his grandparents in Nebraska while his mother battled tuberculosis. The reunited family moved to Fresno, CA, in 1947, where Kermit was Luther League President at Bethel Lutheran Church and very active in the Boy Scouts.
After completing his education at California Lutheran College and Fresno State College, Kermit taught for a total of 34 years at elementary schools in Traver, Fresno and the Evergreen School District in San Jose. He was nominated by distinguished former students as teacher of the year on three separate occasions and served as Evergreen Teachers’ Assn. President.
Kermit was a non-commissioned officer in the US Army National Guard, and a member of American Legion Gilroy Post 217. He was a voracious reader with many interests; in particular, he was a member of the Morgan Hill Photography Club and sang with the Gavilan College Choir.
Kermit is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Barbara DeLaurant, his sister Marie Shakespeare and his brother David DeLaurant.
A memorial service will be held at Advent Lutheran Church in Morgan Hill at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, March 18th, 2011.
