Hollister – A 9-year-old Hollister boy was arrested by Hollister police for assault with a deadly weapon after he held a knife to the throat of an 8-year-old Thursday, according to police.
The 8-year-old boy was walking after school with two other children in the area of Line Street and Apricot Lane around 2:30pm when the 9-year-old came up behind him and held a pocket knife with a two-inch blade to his throat, said police spokesman George Ramirez.
The 8-year-old was not injured, he said
“It had the potential to cause serious injury,” Ramirez said.
The suspect was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, and brandishing a knife, a misdemeanor, Ramirez said.
Police do not release the names of juveniles, and the San Benito County Juvenile Hall would not comment on whether the juvenile had been booked or was still in custody for confidentiality reasons.
Ramirez said he didn’t know why the incident happened – whether there was a prior history between the children or if it was a random act of violence.
Police were notified of the incident after the victim’s parents called and reported it about an hour after it occurred, Ramirez said.
The suspect was then arrested at his home on Del Rio Drive, he said.
Ramirez said he could not recall having a case in Hollister where a young child committed such a serious act.
