It wasn’t pretty, but the Hollister High girls basketball team won’t return its 39-32 triumph over Wilcox in Thursday’s semifinal game of the Mt. Pleasant Tournament in San Jose.
The Balers (4-1) take on a talented Del Mar team tonight in the championship contest at 7 p.m.
“Some girls had off nights, but Desina Gonzales and Naomi Ruiz came through for us,” said Baler head coach Richard Silva. “We’re well-rested and will do our best. Del Mar has one very good player that we’ll have to try to contain. I don’t know how we’ll do it, yet.”
Ruiz had eight points and eight rebounds. Jennifer Tremblay boarded well with 10 rebounds to lead the Balers in that category. Gina Caianiello was kept under wraps on offense and ended up with just seven points. Caianiella, however, contributed five boards and five assists. Trisha Lee had four assists for the Lady Balers.
The Balers, though, were cold from the floor, shooting just 16-of-51, 20 per cent.
A win tonight would not deliver the first varsity tourney title for the school, as previously reported. That was accomplished by the 1987-88 team, which won the Watsonville Tournament in December of ’87 with a win over Harbor. The Balers defeated a Harbor team, which won Central Coast Section Division II titles in ’86 and ’87.
