San Benito runs its winning streak to 10 games with blowout
victories in Watsonville Tourney
Watsonville – The Lady ‘Balers just keep on winning. After two blowout wins in the opening weekend of the Watsonville Tournament, the San Benito softball team pushed its winning streak to ten games.

Following important Tri-County Athletic League victories over Gilroy and Live Oak last week, the ‘Balers cruised to easy wins over Monta Vista Christian and Pacific Grove in tournament play.

Despite seeing his team post an 11-2 and a 13-0 victory, San Benito assistant coach Mike Maheu was quick to say the ‘Balers’ gaudy 19-2 record may be a bit deceiving.

“Our overall record looks better than it is,” Maheu said. “We’re still a young team that needs to play our best to win. The TCAL is a measure e of a team’s worth here.”

On that front, at 4-2 in league play. San Benito is doing quite well. After an encouraging victory over Gilroy, the ‘Balers returned to their home field Friday to record a 2-0 victory over Live Oak.

Freshman Marissa Ibarra pitched a complete game for the second day in a row to spearhead the surging ‘Balers. San Benito’s pitcher limited the Acorns to two hits on the afternoon.

Catcher Ashley Perreira drove in the first run in the fourth, an inning that started with a leadoff single by left fielder Audra Brown. Brown led the offense with her 2-for-3 showing.

After its 15 and 18-hit outputs in Watsonville on Saturday, San Benito returns to league play by visiting North Salinas this afternoon. Maheu hopes the Lady ‘Balers keep their focus.

“If we go out and not play our best game, we’re liable to lose to any team in TCAL,” Maheu said. “If we go out there thinking we’re better than we are, we’re going to get spanked. We can’t afford to let our guard down.”

The San Benito-North Salinas contest starts at 4pm in Salinas.
