Seaside – The San Benito Lady ‘Balers took care of business in their season opener on Tuesday, thumping Seaside 7-0, and putting their first match of the 2007 season into the win column.

In fact, while the Lady ‘Balers shut out Seaside, they outscored the Spartans 84-9 in sets.

“It was pretty much a clean sweep,” said Coach Ed Cecena. “They looked good and they did what they’re supposed to do against an easier opponent.”

In singles, no. 1 Amanda Marshall defeated Seaside’s Corina Reyes 6-0, 6-1, while teammate Yumi Chang matched that by defeating Spartan Galaine Lopez 6-0, 6-1.

Lady ‘Baler Abby Woods won 6-0, 6-0 over Ngoc Nguyen, and Kaitlyn O’Keefe upended Christina Lewis 6-2, 6-3 to make it a 4-0 sweep for San Benito in singles.

In doubles, it was much of the same, as Rachel Maheu and Elena Fata defeated Seaside’s no. 1 doubles team Eunice Diaz and Jenny Tu 6-0, 6-0. Crystal Perreira and Marisa Ibarra beat out Esther Kang and Gen Udaundo 6-0, 6-0, while Jaclyn Roquemore and Lauren Ademek ousted Maryanne Russell and Ice Fatae 6-0, 6-2.

“Sometimes it’s difficult to play someone who can’t keep the ball in play, but the girls kept their focus and played their game,” Cecena said. “I was happy to see that.”

The Lady ‘Balers will play next on Thursday when they host Watsonville at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club at 3:30pm.

“They’re pretty decent, competitive,” Cecena said of Watsonville. “This was a good start. It’s nice to ease into the season and get some confidence.”
