It took a child to notice that the Emperor wore no clothes. It’s time for the rest of us to point out to our leaders some equally obvious and unspoken truths:
That budget cuts are leaving San Benito County’s children poorly educated, our food scarcely inspected, our roads potholed, our communities more dangerous.
That taxes represent our investment in the present and future. That the no-tax philosophy is leading us not to paradise, but to Somalia.
That taxes are at historic lows and need to be higher. That corporations and the wealthy are dodging their fair share. That “Job killer” is a fearmongering ruse.Â
That the budget crises in Sacramento and Washington are easily solved through raising taxes.
Anthony Cannella, our state senator, speaks on his website of “building a better and brighter future” for us, but his fix for the budget is even deeper cuts. Â Â Let’s speak the naked truth: That’s nonsense.Â
His allegiance, as with most leaders, is to the business interests whose donations buy the TV ads that  politicians can’t win without. Corporations care about profit, not the health of our communities. How many thousands have pulled the plug on U.S. operations so as to move overseas and increase their bottom lines? They have no use for taxes. But we do. That’s been left out of the budget and debt-limit debate. But as “The Emperor’s New Clothes” showed well, whole societies can be blind–but can also open their eyes.
