Lillian “Lee” Berta passed away March 27, 2007 in Gilroy. Lee was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Carl Berta; she is survived by her two sons, James Berta and his wife Norma of Gilroy, and John Berta and his wife Michelle of Prunedale; her grandchildren James G. Berta and Nicole Sorenson.

Lee came to Gilroy at an early age, graduated from Gilroy High School, and played summer baseball, where she met her husband Carl. Along with being a caring wife and mother, she started many businesses in the area, including a number of dress shops, and a tour business, covering various destinations throughout the United States.

In the early 1950’s, Lee organized a women’s drill team called The VFW and Las Senoritas, winning numerous national championships. They also performed before a live TV audience, a show hosted by Art Baker, “You Asked For It.” After several successful years of marching, she and community leaders created a festival called, “Gilroy Bonanza Days.” Along with the promotion of Bonanza Days, Lee created a float, along with Jim Laizure, that traveled to different California locations, winning various awards. In the early 1970’s, Lee was also awarded Gilroy Chamber’s Woman of the Year for her community activities.

A viewing will take place Sunday from 1 P.M., with a Vigil service beginning at 5 P.M. at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. The Funeral will be at 10 A.M. on Monday, also at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
