Paicines – One of the San Benito County’s wine pioneers was injured in a Wednesday afternoon crash on Cienega Road.

Robert Enz, 71, crashed a 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe into a tree off Cienega Road near Limekiln Road, the California Highway Patrol reported. Enz’s son, Bob Enz, said Thursday that his father is doing well and should be released from the hospital today after recovering from a broken ankle.

“He’s doing fine,” Bob Enz said. “He got very lucky.”

Officer Chris Armstrong, the public information officer for the Hollister-Gilroy area office of the CHP, said Enz was flown by helicopter to San Jose Regional Medical Center. He was in stable condition Thursday afternoon, according to a hospital nurse.

The crash is still under investigation, but alcohol was not a factor, Armstrong said Thursday.

Enz, along with his wife Susan, began Enz Vineyards and Winery in 1972 on Limekiln Road, according to the San Benito County Wine Growers Association. The vineyard has the Muscat and Negrette variety vines dating from 1895, the oldest in California.

The vineyard boasts 1,500 acres of dry-farmed, premium wine grapes.
