A large crowd gathers to purchase food from the vendor booths during opening day of the downtown Hollister Farmers' Market.

The Seniors Council will be giving away $20 food vouchers to low-income seniors at the Hollister Downtown Certified Farmers’ Market next week.
Seniors can use the vouchers to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs or honey at any certified farmers’ market across the state.
“There is a lot of need out there, so it might just be $20. But it’s really helpful for seniors and they’re just really grateful,” said Caren Dix, the Seniors Council farmers’ market nutrition program coordinator.
Seniors qualify for a voucher if they are at least 60 years old and have a monthly income of $1,800 or less for a single-person household and $2,426 or less for a two-person household.
Next Wednesday, June 11, will be the only day that the Seniors Council will be distributing the vouchers in Hollister. The council will be distributing the $20 passes on a first-come, first-served basis starting when the market opens at 3 p.m. Each family can receive a maximum of one voucher per year.
The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program is a federally funded program which provides low-income seniors with check booklets that can be used to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, honey and herbs at certified farmers’ markets.
The qualified senior must be present to sign for the voucher. Community senior services information will also be available for anyone who is interested regardless of age or income.
