Police on Thursday morning arrested a 25-year-old Hollister man on suspicion he took a case of beer and ran from a convenient store while a uniformed police officer was inside the business, according to Hollister police.

At about 1 a.m. Thursday, police arrested David Sanchez on recommended charges of burglary and resisting arrest.

Police allege that Sanchez entered the AM-PM convenient store at 301 Gateway Drive and walked into the restroom. About a minute after Sanchez’s arrival, Hollister police Officer Luis Toribio also walked into the AM-PM store, according to police.

The officer was on duty, wearing his uniform and driving a fully marked police car, according to the statement.

Police allege that at 12:54 a.m., Sanchez left the bathroom, took a case of beer from the cooler and ran from the store without paying, yelling “later” to the clerk. The officer witnessed the incident and chased the suspect on foot westbound from the store, arresting him after a brief struggle on Gateway Drive.

Police booked Sanchez at the San Benito County Jail.
