Police arrested the driver of a stolen vehicle after a pursuit from Morgan Hill to Gilroy that reached 90 mph.
A Morgan Hill patrol officer saw the vehicle, a black Honda Civic, traveling north on Monterey Road from Tilton Avenue about 4:50 p.m. Sunday, according to Sgt. Troy Hoefling.
Authorities ran the vehicle’s information to confirm it was stolen, and the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, Hoefling said. As soon as the officer turned on the patrol vehicle’s emergency lights, the driver of the Honda accelerated up to 90 mph on Monterey Road.
The officer, joined by San Jose police, followed the car, which entered southbound U.S. 101 from Bernal Avenue, Hoefling said.
Police followed the car toward Morgan Hill, where California Highway Patrol officers took over the chase, according to Hoefling.
The pursuit ended at U.S. 101 and Monterey Road in Gilroy, after the CHP deployed a “spike strip” on the roadway to puncture the car’s tires and render it inoperable, police said. The suspect drove over the device and stopped the vehicle due to the damage caused by the spike strip.
The suspect and only occupant of the vehicle, Ramon Jaramillo, 28, was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of possession of stolen property and felony evading police, Hoefling said. Jaramillo is currently on probation for weapons and drug related charges.
The CHP is still investigating the incident.
