A man was killed in a tragic accident on San Felipe Road on Friday when he reportedly jumped out of a pickup truck and was struck by two cars.

The name and age of the man has not been released by the San Benito County Sheriff/Coroner’s office.

Exact details of the 9 p.m. accident are still sketchy as the California Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Department continue to sort through information and witness statements related to the deadly accident.

However, investigators at the scene said it appears the man was riding in a silver Chevrolet pickup truck with his father, whose name was also not released, in the northbound lanes of San Felipe Road.

The unidentified man and his father reportedly got into an argument and the man said he was going to jump out of the pickup, investigators said.

At some point, he did end up outside of the pickup, which was traveling at highway speeds, with his body in the middle of the road, investigators said.

Two other vehicles, which were not too far behind the Chevrolet, reportedly ran over him, one right after the other, because they could not stop in time to avoid the accident, investigators said.

Hollister firefighters and several deputy marshals were also among the emergency crews who helped at the scene.

Investigators said they are continuing the investigation to rule out any possibility of foul play. They said, at this point, there does not appear to have been any foul play involved in the accident. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the man’s death.

The accident, located about half a mile north of Fallon Road, forced the CHP and the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department to shut down the northbound lanes of San Felipe Road between Fallon and the Highway 156 bypass for more than four hours.

It took crash investigators and emergency crews that long just to process the gruesome scene for evidence and to remove the man’s body.

The tragic nature of the accident scene was intensified by the cries and wailing of the man’s relatives who showed up at the scene and demanded to see his body and to know what had happened.

Deputies and CHP officers, who appeared sympathetic to the family’s grief, said they had to keep them away from the scene while they conducted the investigation.

More details on the accident are expected to be released later today.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call The Sheriff’s Department at 636-4330 or the CHP at (866) 502-5058.
