A man rolling a marijuana joint in a public parking area inadvertently led police to a trove of guns, ammunition, cash and drugs, police said.
Morgan Hill officers patrolling the area of Dunne Avenue and Condit Road about 10:30 p.m. May 5 when they pulled into the Gas and Shop convenience store on the northwest corner of the intersection. They saw a man sitting in a parked white 1994 Nissan Altima outside the shop who appeared to be rolling a marijuana cigarette, according to Sgt. Troy Hoefling.
The officers contacted the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, Luis Medina, 23 of Morgan Hill, and searched the vehicle, police said. During the search officers found about another 100 grams of marijuana, as well as packaging materials and a digital scale.
Medina was arrested at the scene, and officers later obtained a warrant to search his residence, Hoefling said.
During that search, police found three assault weapons including an UZI, AR-15 and an AK-47, Hoefling said. Also found were four handguns, a shotgun and 54 ammunition magazines, 29 of which were fully loaded.
Also at Medina’s home, officers found more than $25,000 cash, illegal psilocybin mushrooms, prescription Diazepam pain medications, concentrated cannabis and a counterfeit $100 bill, Hoefling said.
Police declined to say where Medina’s residence is, as the investigation is ongoing.
Medina was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of possession of an assault weapon, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana for sales, transportation of marijuana, possession of concentrated cannabis and possession of fictitious currency, Hoefling said.
Investigators do not have any information indicating that Medina was involved in the sale or trafficking of firearms, nor that he is involved in organized street gang activity, Hoefling said.
