Manuel Cardoso Silva of San Jose died Saturday, May 17, 2003. He was 92.

Mr. Silva was born in the Azores Islands. He came to the United States in 1968 and had lived locally for 32 years. In the Azores he was a farmer and blacksmith who was known and respected for his ability to hand make tools and farm implements. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends in San Jose and attending Portuguese celebrations and family gatherings.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Fernanda “Fern” and Albert Gomes of Hollister, Tony and Natalia Silva of Morgan Hill, Maria Adelaide and Manuel Melo of San Martin, Manuel Fernando and Manuela Silva of Portugal, Jose Cardoso and Fernanda Silva of Canada, Estela and Joe Bettencourt of Canada; his son, Frank Silva of San Jose; his brother, Francisco Silva of Azores, Portugal; his sister, Maria Do Rosario Silva of Azores, Portugal; 16 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Isaura Silva.

Vigil services will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at Five Wounds, Portuguese National Church, 1401 Santa Clara Street, San Jose. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in San Jose.
