Marie H. Vallejo died at her residence in Hollister on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004. She was 95.

She was born in Amador, Calif. and came to San Benito County in 1925.

She grew up in the Gold Country area of Amador and Placerville, where she attended Amador City Schools (and later San Benito High School). Her father mined in that area, and he had his own claim on the Weber Creek, outside of Placerville. The tunnels that Highway 70 travels along by the Feather River were blasted by her father.

Marie and her late husband Joseph operated the State Market, which was a general grocery store at 731 San Benito St., from 1934 until 1957.

When she retired from the grocery business, Marie worked for J.C. Penny in Hollister for 14 years.

Besides being a homemaker, she and her husband were self-employed orchardists, raising apricots and walnuts for most of their lives here.

On July 2, 1999, she and her husband celebrated their 72th wedding anniversary. He died the following month.

Her biggest interests and enjoyment were her family and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Vallejo, who passed away in August of 1999; her brother Frank Galdos, sister Henrietta Leichtle, brother Tommy Galdos and brother Eugene Galdos, all of Hollister.

She is survived by her son Louis Vallejo and his wife Jane, of Chular; her son Joseph Vallejo Jr. and his wife Rosemary, son Cecil Vallejo and his wife Enes, son Anthony Vallejo and his wife Florence, all of Hollister; her daughter Maria Vallejo and her partner Rod Hass of Mariposa; sisters Louise Branum, Helen Garcia, Laura Baughman, Juanita Marcus and Carmen Vieira of Hollister; brother-in-law Dick Vieira and sister-in-law Bernice Galdos, of Hollister.

She has 20 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
