Mary Frances (Underwood) Winkle, 91, passed away at her home in
Columbus, Mont. on the morning of April 15. She was born June 29,
1913 on the family ranch near Paicines, the daughter of Edwin and
Cecil (Hawkins) Underwood. She studied nursing at Highland Hospital
in Oakland.

On April 22, 1934 she married Raymond E. Winkle. Mary worked as a private nurse caring for the elderly in their homes. She enjoyed gardening and was famous for her Irises. She was a great cook and made good old-fashioned farm food. Mary was an active member in her church as a leader of Dorcus. In 1995 Mary and Ray moved to Columbus.

Mary is survived by her children, Thomas E. (Barbara) Winkle of Columbus; Verna Lee Haas of Columbus; Robert R. (Eileen) Winkle of Spirit Lake, Idaho; and Bonnie Gene (Douglas) Whittaker of Tacoma, Wash.; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; brother William (Mary Anna) Underwood, sisters, Irene Bradley, Marion Moore and Ann Nell Williams, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Ray, who died March 30, 2002.

Services were held on April 20 at Mountain View Cemetery in Columbus. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Association, 3010 11th Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101; Big Sky Hospice, PO Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107 or the charity of one’s choice.
