Long-time Hollister resident Mary R. Contival died Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the William and Inez Mabie Skilled Nursing Facility after a long period of failing health. She was 96.

Mrs. Contival was born in Italy. She came to the U.S. at the age of 4 and had lived in Hollister since 1934. In her early years in the city she was a cannery worker and was a homemaker for 47 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and the John 15 Prayer Group.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Audelia Contival; her nephews, Jeff and Allan Contival of Hollister; her niece, Cheryl Larios of Hollister; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Contival; her son, Edward “Eddie” Contival; and her sister-in-law, Josephine Banks.

Visitation will be after noon Wednesday at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Family and friends will gather at the funeral home Thursday at 9:30 a.m. and proceed to Sacred Heart Church for a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial and graveside services will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
