Dan Reed dead following a prolonged illness
San Juan Bautista resident and presiding mayor George Daniel Reed, known as Dan, died Nov. 2 at Stanford Hospital.
Reed suffered from a congenital lung disease and had been in the hospital for a prolonged stay in April at Salinas Memorial Hospital.
In April, San Juan city manager Janice McClintock said it was a serious situation, but that he was showing improvement. Reed returned to his duties on the city council after being released from the hospital.
Reed joined the city council in 2004. He became mayor after being elected by the council on a rotational basis – someone is elected as mayor or vice mayor every year. Despite his illness, he attended most city council meetings and arrived with a portable oxygen pack to help him breathe.
A resident in San Juan for a dozen years, Reed was an active volunteer at Mission San Juan Bautista. His goal on the city council was to protect the historical value of San Juan. He had been serving on the Local Agency Formation Commission, but had scaled back his involvement with other committees since falling ill in April, said Trish Paetz, the deputy city clerk.
Reed served in the United States army for three years during the Vietnam War. He had retired from the orchid industry and enjoyed spending his free time golfing.
Reed is survived by his wife Marie and his daughter, Dana and his grandson Samuel.
Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home in Hollister. The rosary will be 6:30 p.m. followed by a service at 7 p.m. at Mission San Juan Bautista.
