MBL alignment set for next fall

After earning berths in the Central Coast Section playoffs in five of the six fall sports, San Benito High will experience no changes to its division alignment within the Monterey Bay League in 2013.

San Benito High will remain in the Gabilan Division – the higher division – in all six fall sports.

Next fall’s configuration was approved earlier this month by the league’s Board of Managers, after the managers recieved recommendations from coaches and the league’s athletic directors.

There will be some big changes.

In football, San Benito will be separated from long-time rival Gilroy, which was dropped to the lower Pacific Division. Following the Mustangs (2-8) to the lower division were Everett Alvarez (0-10) and Christopher High (2-8). Seaside (11-1), Alisal (8-3) and Monte Vista Christian (8-3) will move up to the Gabilan Division.

In cross country, San Benito will remain in the Gabilan Division with newcomers North Salinas and Seaside. Gilroy and Palma/Notre Dame will move to the Pacific.

After a second place finished in the Gabilan Division of tennis, the Balers will remain in the higher division in 2013. Notre Dame will move down to the Pacific and Everett Alvarez will move to the Gabilan Division.

In volleyball, Christopher will make the jump to the Gabilan Division, joining North Salinas, Notre Dame, Salinas, San Benito, Seaside and Watsonville in the upper division. Monte Vista Christian will drop to the lower league.

Other changes include girls water polo where Santa Cruz moved to the Gabilan Division and Salinas and Stevenson moved to the Pacific. San Benito remains in the upper division after finishing the season in fourth place.

No changes were made on the boys side, as San Benito will remain in the Gabilan Division with Aptos, Carmel, Monterey, Salinas, Santa Cruz and Soquel.
