Athletics centerfielder Coco Crisp was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Wednesday morning, the A’s confirmed in a press release.
Crisp was detained and taken to City of Scottsdale Jail before being released. He showed up to Phoenix Municipal Stadium on time to join his team for pregame workouts before Wednesday’s 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Crisp didn’t play, but he likely wouldn’t have been in the lineup anyway since he started Tuesday. The A’s regulars have been playing every other day so far.
Crisp declined comment when asked about the situation, saying he would address the media “in due time.”
“The A’s are aware of the situation and take such matters seriously,” the team’s statement read. “The team and Coco will have no further comment until further details are available.”
Manager Bob Geren did say Crisp would be in Thursday’s lineup against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Crisp is the latest major leaguer to be arrested for allegedly driving under the influence. Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was pulled over Feb. 16 in Florida, and Indians outfielder Austin Kearns was arrested Feb. 12 in Kentucky.
“He knows he made a mistake,” A’s second baseman Mark Ellis said of Crisp. “Luckily, nobody got hurt. He knows exactly what he did and knows it wasn’t right. One thing about Coco, he’ll own it. He’ll take responsibility for it.”
Crisp, 31, is in his second season with the A’s and is slated to be the leadoff hitter.
Ironically, the A’s had a security meeting with Major League Baseball officials before Wednesday’s workout. A message stressed in the annual meeting, scheduled before Crisp’s arrest, is having awareness of the various off-field dangers that can land players in trouble.
Crisp signed with the A’s in December 2009. He hit .279 with eight homers and 38 RBIs last season but played in just 75 games because of injuries.
Crisp posts frequently on his Twitter account and often makes reference to his nightlife activities.
