When thinking of the upcoming race for supervisor in District 4, the sprawling and diverse region that includes everything from Ridgemark to south county, we’re reminded of the adage “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”

It’s why the Free Lance Editorial Board has chosen to endorse Reb Monaco in the June 6 primary.

Not only has Monaco served voters well during his current tenure, he’s best prepared to protect their interests while working to improve life for all San Benito County residents during the next four years.

Monaco knows that San Benito County must grow to increase the revenues of local government, but he understands that “smart growth” is more than just a buzz word. It’s why updating the county’s general plan is one of his top priorities.

He also possesses a solid understanding of county government and a track record of bringing the various public agencies throughout the county and city of Hollister together to create viable solutions to serious problems. Throughout all the controversy and personal attacks, Monaco has managed to stay above it all and operate in a professional manner that several other local officials would do well to follow. He doesn’t mix words – with Monaco his decisions are black and white, based on what’s right and wrong.

As the county faces a serious budget problems in the coming years, Monaco is the right candidate to tackle the impending cuts while maintaining essential services. He realizes that residential growth must also include an economic angle to make development continue to pay for its impacts. And he’s a driving force behind the cleanest source of revenue for any area – tourist dollars – with his plan to improve parks throughout the county.

Monaco also understand the transportation issues facing the county and stands behind improvements to Highway 25 including the widening project and bypass through the city.

Though both John Hodges and Tracie Cone bring unique ideas to improving life in District 4 and beyond, we feel Monaco is the best positioned to make the necessary changes immediately. Cone, a former newspaper publisher, is a welcome addition to the political scene and we encourage her to pursue her political aspirations in the future. Hodges, aside from being a likable fellow, also holds a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for San Benito County.

But when it comes to keeping the county on track and stimulating needed solutions for the future, Monaco’s professionalism, intelligence and leadership make him worthy of your vote come June 6.

Editor’s note: Editorial Board member Jae Eade, a supporter of Reb Monaco’s campaign, has recused herself from discussing and voting on supervisor endorsements.
