The Crusader left a message for Julian Gatan with the city’s Community Services Department and told him the location of the offending manhole cover. Let us know if the problem gets fixed, caller.
Previously, Gatan said there are two options for fixing a loose manhole cover: either replacing the lid, or putting a kind of tar under the cover to stabilize it.
Rough Ride Over
the Railroad Tracks
Our caller is tired of the jarring ride he experiences each time he drives over the railroad tracks on Third Street and Fourth Street in Hollister.
“It’s a terrible thing to have to cross,” he said. “It doesn’t get any better.”
Well, caller, the Crusader is still trying to reach Union Pacific Railroad to forward your complaint. But we have not yet been successful.

Late on the Lipizzaners?
A caller contacted the Crusader Thursday criticizing the Free Lance for being late in letting readers know that the world-famous Lipizzaner stallions would be performing in San Benito on Tuesday.
The Free Lance had photos of the performance on the paper’s front page on Thursday – two days after the event.
“July 11?” our caller asked. “Today is the 13th. A little late, aren’t you?”
No caller, we weren’t a little late. In fact, the Lifestyles section of the July 6 Free Lance included a lengthy preview article about the white, fleet-footed stallions. The story included information about when and where the Lipizzaners would be in San Benito. We think five days’ advance notice is sufficient.
As for the pictures on the front of the July 13 edition of the Free lance, we put those on there to give people a taste of the performance, just in case they weren’t able to attend.
