Jason Day (middle, shirtless) was arrested after he led police on a foot chase and tried to hide in a neighborhood off East Dunne Avenue, authorities said.

A registered sex offender who was involved in a domestic dispute ran barefoot from police and was arrested when a sheriff’s K-9 officer bit him on the arm, according to authorities.

Morgan Hill police responded to a call Wednesday afternoon reporting a man and woman in a loud verbal fight on East Dunne Avenue, near the intersections of Flaming Oak Lane and Rustling Oak Court, according to MHPD Sgt. Troy Hoefling.

When officers arrived the man involved in the dispute was “bloody and scratched” around his neck and on his hands, and he was not wearing shoes, Hoefling said.

The man, who officers recognized as Jason Day, 24, “took off running” in an attempt to flee from the officers, according to Hoefling. He ran east up Dunne Avenue, and numerous officers and Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies chased him.

Police found Day after about 30 minutes, hiding in a residential yard at the end of Rustling Oak Court, police said. The officers, including the sheriff’s K-9 unit, surrounded Day’s hiding spot and gave him “numerous commands” to surrender, Hoefling said.

After Day declined to come out, the sheriff’s dog was sent in and bit the suspect on the left arm, Hoefling said. The extend of Day’s injuries were unknown, but Hoefling added he had what appeared to be bloody teeth marks where the dog bit him.

Day is registered for his conviction of a number of sex-related offenses, including lewd and lascivious acts toward a child, rape, assault with a deadly weapon and terrorist threats, Hoefling said. He is listed on the California Megan’s Law with an address on Flaming Oak Court, near the intersection of East Dunne Avenue.

Police also noted that before Day ran from police in Wednesday’s incident, he had a GPS ankle bracelet monitor, but he removed it before officers caught him. Police were still looking for the monitor when they arrested Day.

Because he was injured by the police dog, Day was taken to a hospital and will be medically cleared before being booked or jailed, Hoefling said.

Police have not yet contacted the female with whom Day was verbally fighting before officers arrived, and do not know if she was injured.

Officers think Day had been involved in “some kind of physical altercation” before they arrived, resulting in the bloody scratches they noticed before he ran, Hoefling said.
