Hollister firefighters were all geared up and ready to go as they rushed out to what they believed was a hazardous material spill, only to find that what had been spilled was 50 gallons of wine.

On Oct. 24, the fire department was called out to the 1400 block of Prune Street after residents in the area reported a strange purplish liquid running down the street’s gutters and possibly spilling into the storm drains, firefighters said. The department’s policy is that whenever they come across an unknown substance, they treat it as though the material could be hazardous.

However, once they arrived at the scene, firefighters, who had already begun to don hazardous materials suits identified the substance as wine, fire officials said.

Once it was identified, the fire department called officials at the Public Works Department for help. A nearby public works crew threw absorbing material over the wayward wine spill, scooped it up with shovels and placed it in a container for disposal.

Fire officials said they were not sure exactly what caused the spill, several neighbors contacted by the Free Lance said they had no idea there had ever been a spill. The incident is still under investigation.
