Memorial Day motorcycle run

HOLLISTER – The American Legion Riders No. 69, of San Benito, is sponsoring a Memorial Day weekend motorcycle event May 27. The intent of the run is to focus on the monuments and memorials that have been dedicated to the memory of those in the community that have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom enjoyed today. The event will also recognize the individuals or groups who erected monuments in the community, including Edward Matthews, the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 9242 and the American Legion No. 69. VFW hosts comedy night

HOLLISTER – VFW Post 9242 is hosting a Comedy Night and Spaghetti Feed on June 2 at the IOOF Lodge located at 300 Fourth St. Doors open at 5 p.m. with no host cocktails, dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are available through VFW members, at Design Line & Granger Printers in downtown Hollister or at the door. All proceeds benefit active duty military families in San Benito County.

Pacheco State Park’s Eleventh Kite Day

HOLLISTER – The 11th Annual Family Kite Day will be held at Pacheco State Park, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other fun activities include a “Make Your Own Kite Free” table and free face painting as well as pie eating contests and bubble gum blowing contests. Plus, there will be interesting tables to check out, including nature tables, a sun and wind table and craft tables. Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats and/or sunscreen, drinking water, lawn chairs and a picnic lunch. It may be cool and windy or very hot. Hot Dog Heaven from Los Banos will sell lunches. There is a $5 state park day use fee per car.

Fiesta at San Juan Mission

SAN JUAN – On June 24, Old Mission San Juan Bautista will celebrate the bi-centennial dedication of its church with a fiesta, acknowledging Native American, Mexican, Spanish, Franciscan and settlers’ influence on the Central California area.

At 11 a.m., led by Azteca dancers and religious banners, priest and people will reverence the 200th anniversary with a procession from the church, through downtown and into the mission’s Historic Olive Grove. This kicks off a multi-cultural, family-oriented fiesta. All are welcome to enjoy on-stage entertainment continuing until 5 p.m. with mariachi music, singers, traditional and contemporary Mexican music and dancing. There will be historic displays, a visit by Bishop Garcia, costumed participants, food, beverages, games and activities for all ages. The traditional chicken barbecue is not to be missed. This fiesta promises to be a grand celebration of this unique bi-centennial.

Admission and stage entertainment is free. Tickets for food, games and activities are priced so all can enjoy the event. Visit the museum and church for a small donation. The gift shop will be open as well.

2013 spring break opportunity

Sidesaddle & Company show

AROMAS – The Aromas Community Grange presents Sidesaddle & Company June 2, at 7:30 p.m. The five-member band plays a repertoire of traditional bluegrass, seasoned with country, Irish, Cajun and cowboy western, including gospel, folk, novelty and comedy. Dressage at the Gaits

HOLLISTER – Gilroy Gaits, 7777 Frazier Lake Road, in Hollister, will be hosting a dressage show June 2 and 3, starting at 8 a.m. The show is free and will include a showcase of all levels of dressage riders. It will showcase top-level dressage riders, world-class western trainer Warwick Schiller doing a Pas De Deux with dressage trainer Allida Allen, a barrel-racing demonstration/competition between dressage riders and barrel racers.

The show will be held in the new 300×150-foot indoor arena with bleacher seating. There will be lunch, snacks and beverages available for purchase throughout the day.

After the last ride on Saturday, around 4 p.m., Gilroy Gaits will host a wine and cheese reception and equestrian demonstration. Prizes will be raffled off throughout the event.

Ag Against Hunger luncheon

SOLEDAD – Ag Against Hunger will host its 19th annual Ag Woman’s Luncheon where the Ag Woman of the Year Award will be presented. The event celebrates women in agriculture in San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. Registration open for Gavilan College

HOLLISTER – Gavilan College is accepting registration for new and returning students who have completed high school for summer and fall classes. Open registration starts May 14, with summer classes starting on June 11. Fall classes start Aug. 29.

Poppy Week kicks off

HOLLISTER – The VFW Auxiliary Post No. 9242 and American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 69 will kick off Poppy Week May 13-19. The official Poppy Day is May 18, when residents are asked to observe the day by wearing a poppy. The flower is an emblem of sacrifice made by veterans and the crepe paper flowers are made by disabled veterans in 40 states. The proceeds will go to Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation. Poppy posters will be up in participating businesses.VFW members will be at the Hollister Post Office, Safeway and Nob Hill to sell the paper flowers.

Si, Se Puede takes registration for summer, seeks activity leader

HOLLISTER – The Si, Se Puede Learning Center is seeking a site activity leader to work with kids between the ages of 5 and 13. The applicant must be 18 years of age, a US citizen or legal resident, a college student and able to commit to a six-month term from April to September 2012. Those hired will receive a monthly living allowance that totals $2,590 for the six months and an educational award of $1,175 upon completion of the program.

The center is also taking sign ups for its summer program. The program runs June 11 through Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $35 per week, per child for residents of the Villa Luna Apartments ($10 per week for additional siblings.) The cost is $70 per week per child for non residents ($20 per week for additional siblings.)

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau is accepting entries for the 2012 Saddle Horse Show Parade, scheduled for June 21, in downtown Hollister. The parade is limited to 80 entries, and forms are due June 15, by 4 p.m.

Hollister Hills offers educational opportunities

HOLLISTER – The interpretation department at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area is gearing up to provide a variety of educational opportunities through the parks curriculum-based education program and its Junior Off-Highway Ranger adventure. The free programs offer educational, inspirational and recreational opportunities. The program will expose students to the various topics concerning the environment, cultural preservation, OHV safety and OHV recreational opportunities.

In addition to the outdoor program, Hollister Hills SVRA staff members will be holding a Junior Off-Highway Ranger program. The free program will provide participants the opportunities to reinforce safe riding habits, improve and enhance their skills and riding etiquette while learning about the importance of protecting natural and cultural resources.

SAN JUAN – The Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista is planning its 49th Annual Antique and Collectibles Fair for Aug. 12, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in San Juan. Art League calendars on sale

HOLLISTER – The 2012 Hollister Art League Calendars of local flowers are now on sale.

This calendar entitled “Beauty Around” features reproductions of original art in

oils, watercolors, acrylics, lino-cuts and photography by local artists.

These colorful calendars may be purchased at Blak Sage Gallery and Country Rose Gallery & Frame. All proceeds go toward San Benito High School art scholarships.

HOLLISTER – The American Red Cross, Monterey Bay Area Chapter is looking for volunteers to staff the Hollister chapter office. The chapter office is located at 357 Fifth St., and the hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shifts are four hours, once a week, but any hours will be considered.
