Assisting Service Dogs
Although most people have pets strictly for companionship, those with disabilities often use animals to help perform every day functions. These “service animals” are trained to provide specific assistance tailored to their owner’s disability. Just like any animal, however, service animals can develop disabilities and need rehabilitation as well.
Top 5: Civil War Days, Rock to the music and more
Civil War Days: The San Benito County Historical Park will host Civil War Days Sept. 15 and 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with re-enactors filling the historical roles of townspeople and soldiers from the era. The annual event will feature battle scenes and a chance to walk around the Historical Village to see what life was like during the period. Admission is $10. There’s now only one “One Direction” – and it isn’t the Tres Pinos band that claimed to own the band name rights in a legal battle with a U.K. pop sensation, according to media reports.
Public comment: Residents talk Clear Creek, CDBG grant and more
At Tuesday's San Benito County Board of Supervisors a handful of residents talked about items not on the agenda. One called for the supervisors to work with Congressman Sam Farr on reopening Clear Creek. Another talked about "new" revenue for San Benito County in the form of unclaimed property held at the state controller's office. Others talked about the importance of the CDBG grant funding and remembered 9/11 on the 11th anniversary of the tragedy.
Police allege car thief deceived tow truck driver with club card
Police alleged a 38-year-old Hollister man stole a vehicle by deceiving a tow-truck driver into believing he was another person with a club card membership, according to the Hollister Police Department.
Bark in the Park Saturday; hantavirus outbreak
Hey, did you make it to Bark in the Park last year? If not, you missed an incredible amount of fun. I was there along with more than 15,000 other humans and at least 3,700 dogs. We had a Great Dane of a time. (Sorry, I just couldn't resist that one.)

Amber is a petite 1-year-old cat who is sweet, friendly and good with other cats. She loves to be held. She has been at the San Martin Animal Shelter since June. If you are interested in adopting this or any other animal at the shelter, please call (408) 686-3900.
Police find woman who fell, went without food and water for 2 days
A Hollister senior citizen went without food and water for two days after falling in her home – before a food delivery worker’s tip led police to her residence.
