One month after Gavilan basketball player and beloved Gilroy teenager Andrel Gaines would have celebrated his 20th birthday, the man who was involved in the car crash that killed him last November walked free.

The Taste of Morgan Hill’s 23rd annual Custom & Classic Car Show will feature a trio of favorite sock-hopping, drive-in-parking, apple pie-transporting, oldies-thumping American beauties - the 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolets.

1.) Baler Summer Nights: The Baler Backers Athletic Organization is holding its annual dinner/dance and auction fundraiser in support of San Benito High School’s Haybaler Athletic Program, Aug. 18, at the San Benito County Fairgrounds/Bolado Park, from 6 p.m. to midnight, with the dinner served between 7 and 8 p.m. Entertainment is being provided by local band favorite Soul Kiss. Tickets for the 21+ event are $50 each and table reservations of eight are also being accepted. There will be a Live & Silent Auction to raise funds for Baler Athletics, which has seen a severe reduction in its funding due to state budget cuts which have affected California’s school system. Local officials held a public meeting Thursday to discuss the notice of preparation of an Environmental Impact Report for the West Hills Water Treatment Plant.

During the Aug. 14 San Benito County Board of Supervisors, two members of the public who support the reopening of Clear Creek to off-road vehicles thanked the supervisors for their support of the effort through the years since the park was closed to off-road uses.
