Top 5: Movies Under the Stars, Hollister Street Festival and more

1.) Movies Under the Stars - Kung Fu Panda 2: The Hollister Downtown Association and the Youth Alliance are sponsoring “Movies Under the Stars,” for one week in July. The featured movie will be “Kung Fu Panda 2,” and it will air July 19, at the grassy lot on the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. Admission is free and the movie starts a half hour after dusk. All minors should be accompanied by an adult. Brenda Weatherly, the president of the HDA, said the nonprofit had struggled to find enough sponsors to have the outdoor movies run for four Thursdays in July, but that they would offer at least one outdoor movie this summer. Sponsors of the program include the San Benito Health Foundation, Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital, Recology, Charles River and the HDA.

Common poorwill mistakenly ‘saved,’ brought to WERC

Garlic ice cream, garlic Jelly Bellies, garlic cheesecake, garlic grasshoppers. Well, maybe the last won’t be offered at the Gilroy Garlic Festival (July 27-29) this year, but who knows? The parents of this unusual little baby bird just might have acquired a taste for spicy bugs when they set up “housing” next door to a Gilroy garlic stand.

Badwater Report

Hats off to Pam Reed and the SVRC crew for a great finish at this year's Badwater Ultramarathon. Pam finished 2nd among women and 17th overall with a time of 31:06:43. It wasn't super hot this year but it was very windy.

Barney in a box

Foster momma Barnadette (in rear), the educational barn owl at the Wildlife Education & Rehabiliation Center, has ceded her housing box to the baby barn owl nicknamed “Burrito Barney” (June 27).  He appears to be mimicking her “threat” behavior—glaring, head low and swaying, wings splayed.

After prior concerns, council backs grant for westside planning

Hollister City Council members voted unanimously Monday to support the Westside Promise Neighborhood grant application – after three of them previously expressed concerns about the application at a July 2 meeting – which could inject a half-million dollars toward fixing the economically distressed area of the city.

Farr calls bill to rename Pinnacles as national park ‘non-controversial’

If John Muir were still alive, documentary filmmaker Ken Burns surmised the pioneering environmentalist would argue that Pinnacles National Monument is a “grand geological library” that deserves the same level of recognition as the country’s most renowned parks.

GPD ends investigation into shooting death of 3-year-old

The Gilroy Police Department has concluded their investigation into the July 5 fatal shooting of a 3-year-old boy on Kentwood Court, and plans to send their findings to the family violence unit of the District Attorney’s Office by the end of the week.

Water Cooler: Do you support reviving a sanctioned biker rally?

Richard Place: “I would like to see another motorcycle rally happen here. The biggest problem, of course, is being able to handle the law enforcement for the event. I don’t believe we need the over enforcement that we had during the last few events but with both our departments short handed from budget cuts, it would certainly be a problem just to plan and run the event. If we can go back to the old plan of putting all the bikes on San Benito Street and the vendors on the side street it would be more appealing to the public and better for crowd control. Maybe we can sell the old tee shirts to pay for the extra officers.”
