After beating the Spirits 7-0 earlier this season, the San
Benito girls tennis team fell 5-2 to Notre Dame Tuesday
SALINAS
Nearly a month after the San Benito girls tennis team posted a 7-0 sweep on Notre Dame, the host Spirits got payback in the form of a 5-2 victory against the Lady ‘Balers on Tuesday in Salinas.
In their previous match-up, although San Benito won seven straight, each match was as close as could be. In fact, of the seven matches, five of them went to a third-set tiebreaker.
That wasn’t necessarily the case on Tuesday, when the Spirits won five of the matches in straight sets.
“It looks like Notre Dame was ready for us today,” coach Ed Cecena said. “They played really well. We competed well, but Notre Dame was ready for us.
“They played a little bit better than we did today.”
The Lady ‘Balers fall to 5-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 12-4 overall.
In singles, Abbie Woods picked up the lone win when she defeated Spirit Daisie Winstone 7-6, 6-0. Otherwise, Notre Dame took the three remaining singles matches.
Alexis Pressas beat San Benito’s Amanda Marshall 6-1, 6-4; Taylor Schwartz defeated Hayley Barker 6-2, 6-2; and Chantelle Edwards won her match 6-1, 6-0 against Bri Ahumada-Wolfsmith.
In doubles, Crystal Perreira and Marisa Ibarra lost a rare match to April Harvey and Brook Carrachiolli 6-3, 6-1, and No. 3 Lauren Ademek and Rachel Smith fell 7-6, 7-5 to Melissa Speciale and Alexandria Leavenworth.
The No. 2 pairing of Vanessa Casalegno and Chelsea Yoakum scored the only doubles win Tuesday when they beat Lexie Flores and Brenda Ponce 6-1, 6-0.
San Benito will return to the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club on Thursday when they host Alisal at 4 p.m.
