Gilroy High fell to the Oak Grove Eagles 46-35 in the Central Coast Section Open Division Championship game Friday.
Taking a 27-20 lead into the half, the Mustangs had the momentum coming into the third quarter, but a rough start quickly gave the Eagles the upper hand.
After fumbling the snap on second down to force third-and-8, Oak Grove quarterback Regis Ward scrambled out of the pocket for a 63-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 27-all at 9:24 left in the third.
Less than four minutes later, the Eagles struck again when Omari Carr (13 carries, 65 yards, 2 TDs) scored on a 5-yard burst.
Gilroy’s offense never regained the rhythm it had in the first half.
Quarterback Jamie Jensen completed 24-of-42 passes for 355 yards for four touchdowns, but also had four interceptions, three coming in the second half.
Danny Contreras led the Mustangs with seven catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Stacy long led the Eagles with three touchdowns, two on the ground and one on an interception return with three minutes left to seal the game.
