Anjelica Navarez, 3, gives a high-five to Hollister Police Officer Carlos Rodriguez after touring his vehicle during the National Night Out event in 2012.

Chief David Westrick at Monday’s council meeting recounted Officer Carlos Rodriguez’s response to the shooting over biker rally weekend in awarding him a commendation for his actions.
Rodriguez was one of the first responders on scene to the July 6 shooting at a Chevron gas station that left three victims with gunshot wounds on the final day of the Hollister Rally motorcycle event.
At about 10:30 a.m. July 6, Rodriguez responded shortly after the shooting incident involving two rival motorcycle clubs, the Boozefighters and Wino’s Crew.
Westrick recalled how Rodriguez got there and retrieved his rifle and first-aid kit. He helped to treat the three victims with respective gunshot wounds, while he monitored two of them closely until emergency medics arrived.
“You may have contributed to saving their lives,” the chief told Rodriguez before awarding him a “Challenge Coin” commendation, the first one issued this year by the department.
Rodriguez spoke and called the incident “tragic.”
“I’m just glad I was able to help and nobody lost their lives,” he said.
