Gilroy police arrested a 34-year-old transient in connection with an early morning burglary of the Money Market on First Street.
Lamarr Marquis McDaniels, of Pasadena, was arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest.
The incident began about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, when Gilroy police responded to an alarm at the Money Market, 281 First St., police said. Upon arrival officers saw a brown Chevrolet Suburban fleeing the area. Their attempt to stop the vehicle was unsuccessful and a short pursuit followed. Three men ran from the SUV in the area of First Street and Wayland Avenue. McDaniels was arrested, but two others evaded police.
“It was a good one,” said Sgt. Jim Gillio of McDaniels’s capture. “We recovered a lot of property that was stolen as well as the suspect vehicle. These were long-range guys, way out of their area.”
Shortly thereafter, two men stole a vehicle that was warming up in a driveway near Gaunt and Welburn avenues, police said.
“The guy goes outside, sees them taking his car and he hops in another car of his,” Gillio said.
The victim followed the stolen car for a short time, but the suspects attempted to evade him by ramming his car with the stolen car, police said. The California Highway Patrol then took over the pursuit, following the vehicle south on U.S. 101 to westbound Highway 129. They found the vehicle abandoned near Murphy’s Crossing about 5:45 a.m.
Police said it is unclear of the two incidents are related, but the incident remains under investigation.
