One person was killed and two others were taken to local hospitals by helicopter with major injuries after a Thursday morning accident on San Juan Road.

The identities of the deceased man and two people sent to local hospitals were not released before press time.

Juan Banuelos, 48, of Hollister, was driving a dump truck towing a trailer on westbound San Juan Road, and a Honda Accord approached from the opposite direction on San Juan Road in the eastbound lane, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol. When the vehicles neared each other, the driver of the Honda Accord suddenly veered to the left into the westbound lane and directly into the path of the dump truck.

The driver of the dump truck attempted to avoid the car but was barely able to apply his brakes before the accident, according to the CHP.

The left front of the Honda struck the left front of the dump truck. The impact pushed the left front wheel assembly several feet toward the rear. The dump truck remained on its wheels and when it came to a stop it blocked all of San Juan Road, according to the statement. The Honda had major damage to the left side.

The driver of the Honda sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision, according to the press release. One passenger was sent to San Jose Medical Center, and the other was sent to Santa Clara Regional Medical Center.

CALSTAR had to use the parking lot at Anzar High School as a landing spot. Jackie Munoz, superintendent for Aromas-San Juan Unified School District, said it was early enough in the morning that no students were on campus. They can use the school site only if no students are on campus, she said.
