Despite a site selection advisory team’s recommendation of the old Fremont School as the location of a new courthouse complex, the California Administrative Office of the Courts has chosen a Flynn Road county-owned parcel, according to a statement released to the Free Lance on Thursday.

Opposition to the decision is sure to mount in the coming weeks, as officials from several agencies – including the City of Hollister, San Benito County Bar Association, Hollister Redevelopment Agency and Hollister Downtown Association – have all voiced support of the Fremont School location on Fourth Street.

The bar association has already passed a motion to draft a resolution in support of the Fremont School site and in opposition of the Flynn Road location, said bar President Paul Breen.

“Justice as it were ought to be accessible, visible, conducted in the open, not out in a bean field a mile from the city limits next to a jail and an orchard,” Breen said.

Breen said he is concerned about lack of office space near the Flynn Road location.

The City of Hollister had intended to donate the Fremont School site pending a seismic review.

In the a statement released to the Free Lance on Thursday, the administrative office of the courts reasoned that access to the jail and future access to other government offices contributed to the selection of the Flynn Road location.

“A location in downtown Hollister, recommended by an advisory team of court and local officials, was passed over by the State due to cost and schedule considerations,” the statement read.
