San Benito is strong in singles, Chieftains sweep in doubles
Hollister – San Benito had a strong showing in the singles matches of its Tri-County Athletic League tennis encounter with Palma, but the Chieftains swept the doubles to earn a 4-3 win Tuesday at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

Danny Coffey, Michael Coffey and Mark Tobias all scored wins in the singles matches, with only Derek Panger falling at No. 3.

In the No. 1 singles match, Danny Coffey and Palma’s Nick Francioni split the first two sets, each winning 6-3. But Coffey delivered in the final set, earning a 12-10 victory.

Michael Coffey also split his first two matches with the Chieftains’ Austin Duke before gutting out the third-set victory.

Tobias found a similar fate against Chris Manlongod before he pulled out a victory.

Unfortunately for the Haybalers, Palma proved to be too strong in the doubles competition.

Patrick Evans and Raul Alfaro earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alan Guttirez and Conner Bray at No. 1. Cory Banks and John Gibbins took down D.J. Nielsen and Jon Ruldofs at No. 2 and Zach Osterello and Chris Barbeau beat San Benito’s No. 3 team of Michael Labuguen and Joe Frusetta.
