A strong effort on the mound from Scott Benson helped Anzar get back into the win column Wednesday with a 4-1 win over host Gonzales.

Benson pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings while striking out 10 to earn the Hawks’ first Mission Trail Athletic League victory of the season.

“We couldn’t really ask for much more than that,” Anzar coach Andrew Barragan said of Benson’s effort, in which he allowed just three hits.

The Hawks scored the only two runs they needed in the top of the third.

Adrian Monroy walked and stole second and third. Massimo Marra-Biggs also walked and stole second and Monroy scored on a Cody Mendiola fielder’s choice. Austin McKinney followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0.

Anzar added some insurance in the seventh. Monroy reached on an error and scored on a triple by Marra-Biggs. Benson added an RBI fielder’s choice for a 4-0 lead entering the final inning.

The Spartans made some noise in the seventh, scoring an unearned run and loading the bases with one out against McKinney, who entered with one out in the sixth and Benson’s pitch count at 100.

But McKinney got out of the jam, striking out the next two batters to finish off the game.

“Our defense was kind of shaky,” Barragan said of his team which committed three errors. “We almost let them back in.”

Anzar returns home at 4pm Friday for the second game of its series with Gonzales.
