Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed a bill introduced by Assemblyman Bill Monning, D-Carmel, to lower the costs of a veterans cemetery at Ford Ord, according to the assemblyman’s website.
The cemetery, which would give local veterans the chance to be buried closer to their hometowns, will be located in District 4 on the former Fort Ord in Monterey County. The cemetery must be approved by the state and federal government.
According to an announcement from Monning:
“The initial application for approval and grant assistance must include preliminary plans, the development of which was estimated by the state to exceed $1 million. Assembly Bill 629 authorizes the California Department of Veteran Affairs to enter into a contract with the Fort Ord Reuse Authority that allows FORA, rather than the State, to complete those preliminary plans. FORA estimated that it can do the work at a significantly lower rate than the State. Once preliminary plans are approved, there are additional costs for more final documents and construction.”
The Central Coast Veteran’s Cemetery Foundation is also hosting the Heroes’ Open, a fundraiser golf tournament on Nov. 12. For more information or enrollment forms for the tournament, contact the Foundation or Supervisor Parker’s office at 679-2610.
