Hollister police Monday announced the arrest of an 11-year-old and 13-year-old on suspicion of vandalizing the Briggs Building parking garage downtown.
Police reviewed video surveillance from the city building, which houses Gavilan College classes, and saw a group of juveniles dropping large cement blocks from the top of the structure, according to a statement from Hollister police.
The following is the announcement from police:
The Hollister Police Department has identified and cited two juveniles involved in a vandalism that occurred earlier this month at the Briggs Parking Building.
On August 6, 2015, several juveniles were reportedly seen at the Briggs Building located on Fourth Street. The building houses Gavilan Junior College and is also a multi-story parking structure for downtown businesses.
The juveniles were allegedly seen dropping large pieces of cement from the top of the building down the stairwell down four floors. Luckily no one was injured but there was damage of approximately $400 to $500 to the building.
Police were able to review the surveillance video installed in the building. The video showed a group of juveniles riding the elevator to the fourth floor and two of the juveniles dropping the large blocks of cement multiple times each.
School Resource Officer Michael Paddy was assigned to follow up on the investigation. Armed with photos and video of the incident, he was able to identify the individuals involved in the vandalism. A 13 year old juvenile and an 11 year old juvenile were both cited for their involvement. The case has been referred to the District Attorney’s Office.
“We were lucky that no one was hurt by the rocks. This is a reminder that parents need to know where their children are at all times.” Chief David Westrick.
The Hollister Police Department would like to remind parents that unsupervised children in and around the parking garage may be cited for trespassing. We would also like to thank the people who came forward and assisted Officer Paddy in identifying the juveniles.
