Agriculture theft

Three women and two men from Salinas were arrested Wednesday by sheriff’s deputies in the 500 block of Lucy Brown Road on suspicion of stealing onions from a farm. Sheriff’s Lt. Roy Iler said the group was seen taking the onions from a field and loading them into the trunk of their Nissan car. Iler said an employee of the farm as well as a person passing by saw the people stealing the onions and phoned police. When deputies arrived they said they found 50 pounds on onions inside the vehicle. Iler said stealing more than $100 worth of produce is considered a felony. All five suspects were booked into San Benito County Jail.
