School district declines funding of gang position

HOLLISTER

The response in Hollister to the city’s use of the anonymous reporting hotline WeTip has been “slow,” but the police department expects to increase its marketing efforts for the service, Chief Jeff Miller told the Free Lance.

Hollister started using the national hotline WeTip in October. It allows residents to anonymously report crimes, and Miller noted how citizens also can use the service to tip off authorities on such activities as illegal dumping.

The number is (800) 78-CRIME.

Miller said the department does not have precise numbers regarding usage in San Benito County. He said police hope to get the word out by doing “some better advertising” and by having the phone number published regularly in the newspapers.

Miller pointed out that residents can anonymously report such tips as the locations of evidence or suspects to investigate and that WeTip provides an “avenue for people to report what they know.”
