Hollister police Tuesday arrested a second suspect in the shooting July 6 during the Hollister Rally.
Police located and arrested Lamar Guy Jones Copeland, 27, of Sacramento. Copeland is a suspected member of the Wino’s Crew biker club and is accused in the shooting on the final day of the local motorcycle rally at a Chevron gas station entering the city.
The shooting incident was reported at 10:36 a.m. that Sunday at the gas station, 631 San Felipe Road near Highway 25 entering the city.
Local police issued a warrant for his arrest several days ago and had been working with the Sacramento Police Department to locate him.
“After many hours of investigation and surveillance, the Sacramento Police Criminal Intelligence Unit located Copeland in Sacramento today,” according to a Hollister police announcement released Tuesday afternoon.
Hollister detectives drove to the Sacramento area Tuesday to get Copeland, according to the HPD. He was transported back to Hollister and booked at the San Benito County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held with no bail.
The three victims are continuing to recuperate from gunshot wounds,
All the injured victims are members of the “Boozefighters” Motorcycle club from the state of Nevada, according to Hollister police. Police believe it was part of a feud with the rival biker club, “Wino’s Crew”.
Michael Richard Kich, 42, from Reno, Nev., also a Boozefighter, was arrested by police for assault with a deadly weapon after he was suspected of discharging a firearm during the confrontation. He later bailed out of the San Benito County Jail.
Last week, Capt. Carlos Reynoso had noted that police were still looking for one shooter in the case, though he did not release any suspect information at the time. The captain said police believe Kich fired back at the rival club members.
Police responded to the shooting on the third and final day of the Hollister Rally motorcycle event and found the three victims of gunshot wounds and another victim of assault. The police department had patrols in the area at the time of the shooting. The gas station is about a mile and a half from the rally event area in downtown Hollister.
Investigators believe a dispute Saturday night continued into Sunday when the two sides crossed paths at the gas station. The two rival clubs had a physical altercation Saturday in the event area, and one member was arrested on suspicion of possessing a dirk or dagger, according to police.
The Hollister Rally is in its second year of a revival after a five-year hiatus due to concerns about once-escalating security costs, which have been reduced significantly in the past two years.
Anyone with information on the shooting should call Detective Matt Weiss at (831) 636-4330, extension 132 or the WeTip line at (800) 78-CRIME.
