The Hollister Police Department will be deploying their new radar trailer in an effort to educate the public regarding speed limits changes and reduce the number of unsafe drivers throughout the city, according to an announcement from the HPD.
According to the announcement from police:
A new radar trailer was purchased using grant funds from the Office of Traffic Safety. The trailer will assist the police in enforcing the existing and soon changing speed limits in an effort to curb unsafe drivers and improve the public safety of residents and visitors to the city.
The trailer will be placed on different streets throughout the city displaying the posted speed limits for that area and will also display the speed of the vehicles as they approach the trailer. The trailer will also be used to collect data regarding the number of vehicles and speeds traveled during designated times on certain roadways.
In accordance with the California Vehicle Code and Hollister Municipal Code, the city Engineering Department conducted engineering and traffic surveys throughout the City of Hollister earlier this year. Proposed changes to the posted speed limits for certain streets were introduced to the City Council on June 18, 2012 and approved on July 2, 2012. The new speed limits will take effect August 2, 2012.
While the majority of the city speed limits will remain the same, some of the current speed limits will be changed as a result of the survey. The streets with speed limits that are being raised will be posted with new signs. The streets affected by lowering of the posted speed limit will be clearly posted with new permanent signs, temporary signs along the roadway, and the deployment of the radar trailer.
Speed changes
The following is a list of streets that will have a change in speed limits to portions of the road:
• Chappell Road
• Fourth Street
• Hillcrest Road

Several criteria were taken into consideration when determining the new and existing speed limits. These include, but are not limited to, the location of schools, parks, pedestrian safety, residential areas, driveways, curves in the roadway, and many other factors.
Anyone with questions or concerns regarding the new or existing speed limits is asked to contact David Rubcic with the engineering department at (831) 636-4340. Traffic complaints can be called into the Hollister Police Department directly at (831) 636-4330 or to Police dispatch at (831) 636-4331.
