HOLLISTER
Eric Nicolaysen, Josh Schafer and Nick Angulo each supplied three goals apiece on Monday, but visiting Carmel found a third-quarter edge to defeat the San Benito High boys water polo team 17-13 in Hollister.
The Balers fall to 3-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League as a result of the loss, 7-8 overall.
Tyler Reuther added two goals to San Benito’s tally, with Tyler Agan and Nathan Thomas each providing one. Trevor Agan made seven saves in net.
“Overall, I was pretty pleased with what we accomplished this afternoon,” San Benito head coach Tom Agan said. “We were absolutely in it, which was kind of fun.”
The Balers led 5-3 after one quarter, and trailed by a narrow 9-8 margin at halftime. It was the third quarter where the Padres made their move, though, outscoring the Balers 5-1.
“We talked at halftime about what we needed to do,” Agan said. “We did exactly the opposite in the third period. We went away from what had been working and the third quarter hurt us.
“We managed to get back on track in the fourth quarter, but it was a little bit too late.”
San Benito outscored Carmel 4-3 in the final period, but trailed 15-13 with 2:49 remaining.
“But overall, this was the best they’ve played this year so far,” Agan said.
San Benito’s match on Monday followed a 1-2 performance at the South Valley Polo Fest in Morgan Hill last weekend. The Balers defeated Sobrato 17-9 but lost to Stevenson 13-6 and Mitty 15-5.
San Benito will have another chance against Stevenson, however. The two teams will meet up in TCAL play on Wednesday in Hollister.
Match time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., and will follow the girls’ varsity match at 3:30 p.m.
JV Note:
The San Benito High junior varsity water polo team lost to visiting Carmel 7-5 in double overtime on Monday in Hollister.
“They did a heckuva job,” Agan said. “Our freshmen have come a long way, really proud of what those guys have accomplished.”
SBHS Girls Water Polo
The San Benito High girls water polo team competed at the H2Oktoberfest on Saturday in Hollister. No results were reported at press time.
