A familiar face will lead the entry at this year’s San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo June 23-25 at Bolado Park in Tres Pinos.

Alethea Prewett, 17, was crowned last weekend as Miss San Benito County Rodeo.

Prewett, a junior at San Benito High School, was once the youngest participant in the horse show and rodeo, and competes annually.

She was selected from a field of three candidates, and narrowly bested Samantha Ceglia, 17, of Hollister and Jenny Graves, 18, also of Hollister in a competition that judged contestants on horsemanship, poise and personality, appearance and scholarship.

As the winner, Prewett received a silver belt buckle, a headstall for her horse and a tiara.

Prewett is a nine-year member of San Benito County Four-H and serves as a junior leader. She exhibits livestock, including at the San Benito County Fair, and has held a variety of club officer positions. She also is a member of Future Farmers of America, and holds office at the local chapter as well.

She enjoys snow skiing, boating and fishing, and loves to support the San Francisco Giants.

Prewett began riding when she was 2, and more recently captured the All-Around Junior rodeo award for four years. She most enjoys competing in the stock horse and Western horsemanship class. She is the daughter of Jim and Michelle Prewett.

Ceglia also is active in FFA, where she enjoys competing in public speaking contests and serving as an officer. She plans to run for chapter president next year. She has been around horses all of her life, and began rodeo competition when she was 6. She joined the National Barrel Horse Association at 10 and the American Cowboys Team Roping Association at 13. She hopes to compete in college rodeo and perhaps join the professional circuit.

Like the other contestants, Graves is involved in FFA, where she is chapter reporter and sectional vice president. She is a Special Olympic activity director.

She competes in the American West Gold Coast Barrel Racing Association and this year qualified for the state finals, which she plans to attend in October.
