Monday night’s excellent showing at City Hall was a positive step toward keeping and improving the Hollister Independence Rally.

We salute the many folks in the community and county for taking the time to pack the City Council meeting and show their support for the rally.

The speakers were also excellent and made a variety of good points on why the Fourth of July event should not be sent packing.

It was hardly, as shortsighted critics have been quick to cry, just a few local business owners who would benefit.

Rotary president Richard Ferreira’s points on how many local charities benefit from the nonprofit rally especially hit home.

City Council members passed a motion to let the planning continue for the eighth-annual event – which is just three months down thunder road – and we agree with that decision.

However, City Manager Dale Shaddox emphasized that a new contract is not guaranteed. Several logistical and money matters remain, especially having sufficient security at the event.

But it at least appears that the wheels of cooperation are finally in motion, and it is up to both the city and organizers to keep working hard on the details within a reasonable deadline.

Hollister Police Chief Jeff Miller should also be commended for getting the word out across the state that cops are needed. Many police officers are motorcycle enthusiasts, which might help the request.

Senator Jeff Denham’s support late last week also seemed to give the movement to keep the rally a much-needed jump-start.

Killing this year’s rally should be ruled out unless the Hollister Independence Rally members completely drop the ball, which we are certain they will not.

And we hope that Monday night’s meeting will be looked back on in years ahead as the turning point for a positive and growing future for the rally, similar to the once-struggling Gilroy Garlic Festival.

We see a Hollister Independence Rally that, with good and innovative planning and strong leadership, will continue to bring in tourism dollars and benefit local charities – along with providing a safe and fun atmosphere for visitors and residents alike.
