After more than a week of inactivity, the Gavilan baseball team was just glad to get back into action.

“For not being on the field and not playing much baseball, it is definitely a positive to be back out here,” Gavilan coach Neal Andrade said. “We were out here since 8 a.m. this morning getting the field ready.”

The Rams, who have already had five games canceled because of rain, resumed preseason play Wednesday with a 9-1 loss to visiting San Jose City College.

“We didn’t execute and they did,” Andrade said. “Regardless of how many runs you give up, you won’t win a game scoring one run.”

Gavilan (3-5) was unsuccessful on two sacrifice bunt attempts early on. But even so, the game remained close until the seventh inning when San Jose City broke the game open with four runs.

Miles Sanchez, who pitched six innings, took the loss. Gavilan relievers included Blaine Sutton, Robert Silveira and Anthony Trefielo.

“Any time your starter can give you a chance to win, that’s all you can ask from him,” Andrade said. “We still got a young team. We’re just trying to take the positives from each game.”

Charlie Duffy (2-for-4) and Dane Lamanna (2-for-3) had multiple hits for the Rams.

Gavilan will play City College of San Francisco Thursday as the visitors in their own park. The game was scheduled to be played in San Francisco, but the field was still too wet, so the game was moved to Gilroy.
